2008 Summer Reading Program

To encourage your child to read this summer we are continuing our Summer Reading program. This program is voluntary, but highly recommended, to help your child maintain their reading and comprehension skills over the summer months. We are asking that your child read on a weekly basis, and log their minutes on specially provided Summer Reading Calendars. (Click here to download the 2008 Summer Reading Packet, which contains program information, the 2008 Summer Reading Calendar, and helpful hints on how to establish a life long love of reading along with a list of recommended books/authors.)

Children entering first and second grade are asked to read 90 minutes each week. Children entering third, fourth, and fifth grade are asked to read 150 minutes each week. These minutes can be spread out over a week's time, and you may take one week off for family vacation. After your child has read for the day, they should log their minutes on the Summer Reading Calendar (Click here to download the calendar only). Parents, we are asking you to help us make sure that your child reads on a regular basis. This reading practice will help them retain the skills they have learned during the school year.

At the end of summer vacation, when your son/daughter has completed the calendars, please fill out the bottom portion of the packet's cover letter and return the entire packet to your child's new teacher. Your child must turn in the Summer Reading packet during the first week of school in order to be considered for a prize drawing. Each child who completes the calendar and turns in the bottom portion of the letter will receive special recognition at the September "Citizen of the Month" assembly. They will then be eligible for a drawing for a $20.00 Borders gift certificate. We will be awarding one gift certificate per grade level.

We also encourage parents to read to their children; even older children love to be read to. It would be great for your child to read from the packet's list of recommended books/authors in order to get them ready for the next grade.

Have a great summer reading all your favorite books!

Sincerely,
